LEVEL 1: QUICK UNDERSTANDING (EXECUTIVE SUMMARY)

INVESTORS & DEVELOPERS
What is it?

Engineered solid wood panel product manufactured by gluing orthogonal layers of structural timber boards, offering high rigidity and carbon sequestration.

Where is it used?

Multi-story residential and commercial timber buildings (up to 8-12 stories), Structural floor slabs and shear wall assemblies

01. TECHNICAL OVERVIEW & ENGINEERING CHARACTERISTICS

Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) is an engineered wood product manufactured in accordance with SR EN 16351. Consists of 3, 5, or 7 orthogonally stacked kiln-dried softwood boards bonded under pressure with structural polyurethane adhesives. Delivers bi-directional load bearing, high in-plane shear capacity, predictable charring rate in fire conditions, and negative embodied carbon.

02. CONSTITUENTS & MANUFACTURING SPECIFICATION

  • ▸C24 strength-graded softwood boards (spruce/fir) kiln-dried to 12% ± 2% moisture content
  • ▸Formaldehyde-free 1-component polyurethane (1K PUR) or EPI structural adhesives (SR EN 15425)

✓ ADVANTAGES & STRENGTHS

  • •Negative embodied carbon (sequesters ~1 ton of CO2 per cubic meter of timber)
  • •Lightweight structure (approx. 1/5th weight of concrete), drastically reducing seismic inertial forces
  • •Exceptional dimensional stability due to orthogonal cross-lamination
  • •Predictable charring rate providing natural fire protection to interior wood core

⚠ LIMITATIONS & RISK FACTORS

  • •Strict moisture protection required during transportation, storage, and erection
  • •Requires acoustic decoupling membranes to mitigate low-frequency impact sound transmission
  • •Emerging supply chain in Romania with higher dependence on central European manufacturing

03. ARCHITECTURAL & STRUCTURAL USE CASES

Multi-story residential and commercial timber buildings (up to 8-12 stories)
Structural floor slabs and shear wall assemblies
Low-carbon and nZEB architectural developments
